I’ve crafted the art direction of Rap-Up Magazine since it’s inception, having created the masthead, typographic standards, seasonal color palettes, and versioning through editorial design. I’ve also designed the magazine’s identity, implementing a thorough identity package that includes business cards, letterhead, envelopes, notepads, notecards, and other assorted stationery.
Cover design, interior illustrations, and chapter title graphics for Rap-Up’s premiere book, published by Grand Central Publishing. Cover illustration by the mighty Upso.
Starting with issue eleven in the summer of 2008, I created a full redesign of Rap-Up. As the target audience has gotten older and more sophisticated, the magazine underwent a facelift to imbue it with a more demure and cosmopolitan aesthetic. A highly formalized grid was developed for the magazine, as well as new typographic standards. A refined palette was applied, as was a fresh approach to artist photography.
The Winter issue, the second after the redesign, included a tipped-in promotional mini-issue of the magazine that was branded content for TAG Records and TAG bodyspray.
Art direction, brand direction, and graphic design for Rap-Up, a hip-hop and R&B magazine aimed at Generation Y from 2004 to the present. I’ve crafted the art direction of the publication since it’s inception, having created the masthead, typographic standards, seasonal color palettes, and versioning through the editorial design for eleven issues.
The first incarnation of the magazine was predominantly pop: bright colors and expressive display typography have made the magazine consistently stand out.
There have been innumerable other aspects of designing for Rap-Up, including posters, print ads, apparel, broadcast design, and website design, development, and deployment.

Ongoing identity design for the annual Portland Documentary and eXperimental Film Fest. Since 2004, I have designed the visual identity for the U.S.’s premiere documentary film festival, renewing the logo annually and deploying a full identity package that includes logos, type standards, color standards, posters, postcards, flyers, promotional slides for movie theaters, apparel graphics, tickets, passes, programs, booklets, and intro animations. You can view a medley of the intro animation bumpers by year here.
